Importance of Bringing Happiness to our Local Communities

With the theme for 2019 being #HappierTogether, it’s important for us to provide fulfilment and a sense of purpose for our people, and help customers build better businesses in today’s changing world

An organisation of Impellam’s scale touches many lives and communities. We work in 76 locations across the world, dealing with thousands of clients and candidates daily, both as part of the working world and their wider lives. We encourage our people to use their talents to give back to those communities, whether it’s hosting bake sales to running marathons, wrapping Christmas presents, growing moustaches for Movember or playing endurance golf.

People across the Group come together in response to events that touch the lives of our colleagues, clients and candidates. For example, following hurricane Harvey about a year and a half ago, Impellam launched a global fundraising campaign for the US’ Houston Hurricane Relief fund, and Bartech Staffing organised a rapid response in sourcing 3,000 call centre operators for the ‘Texans Helping Texans’ hurricane Harvey relief response.

Our people support causes that matter to them personally. Examples of this are SRG spending a day answering calls to take donations for the ‘Backpack Buddies Mediathon and food drive’, collecting and donating food to the Inter-Faith Food Shuttle in Raleigh, North Carolina, which provides healthy meals to those in need. Career Teachers raised around £100 through a bake sale at the office for comic relief recently for Red Nose Day and Blue Arrow’s 65 branches fundraised locally for Mind UK, the Scottish Association of Mental Health, and Aspire (Ireland and Northern Ireland).

The team loves getting involved in charity fund raising because it’s rewarding, it’s fun and brings us together. We collectively feel we are making a difference (even if it’s small!) and if it helps someone out that needs it – then why not! I believe all companies should get involved in raising money for charities or sponsored events as it is very fulfilling and it personally makes me feel good to be able to contribute and give back to certain projects.” – Digital Marketing Executive at Career Teachers.

A further aspect of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) work is building a trusted, sustainable supply chain. Bartech Staffing, our US specialist staffing brand, works with small, medium-sized (SME) recruitment businesses to fulfil specialist roles required by clients. Recognising the importance of working within a thriving and diverse business community, Bartech Staffing set up the ‘Diversity Delivers’ initiative. On this two-year programme, small businesses owned by minorities and veterans are offered executive level coaching to help them expand their business. They also have access to an annual supplier summit that helps them partner with others to further realise their ambitions. Monthly check in calls and quarterly business reviews with Bartech Staffing’s experienced team help to turn coaching into business action.

When a community is strong, a business has a strong base of clients and candidates to work with. Giving back to communities can also be seen as a form of business networking.* Volunteering in your local communities is a great way to build relationships, network and create brand awareness. Whether your business donates in the form of money or volunteering time, it increases your business’ visibility in a positive way and provides a human face to a business.

Research has previously shown that community involvement is important to some people.* This may be the deciding factor for candidates when considering working for your business. This attitude is particularly prominent amongst millennials, who form a large part of today’s workforce.

At Impellam, we are part of communities all over the world and it is our responsibility to be an active corporate citizen in all areas that we operate in. In order to live up to our vision of becoming the world’s most trusted staffing company, we’ll continue to create business initiatives like the Bartech Staffing's ‘Diversity Delivers’ initiative that invests time, skills and money to create positive impacts in our local communities. Our people also are encouraged to get involved in initiatives that make a difference, which in turn provides fulfilment and a sense of purpose for our people and help our customers build better businesses in a changing world.
